Enhanced ACT Resources — Official Practice First
Looking for Enhanced ACT resources that put free ACT.org practice first? This is a curated stack — not a link dump. Official timed tests are the real measure of your score under current clocks (English 50Q/35m, Math 45Q/50m, Reading 36Q/40m; Science optional). Books for volume on one weak section. Site prompts repair skills between full tests — they do not invent your composite. Want the $0 path only? Start with the Free Enhanced ACT Prep Stack.
English conventions + rhetoric under the new English clock is where a lot of students still train classic-era habits: use our free ACT English Grammar clinic before buying every section’s book at once. Need a calculator for Math? Read allowed calculator advice (bring what you know; CAS is a hard no) before adding hardware to a book cart. Still blanking passage four or training only SAT short stems for ACT Reading? Use the free Enhanced ACT Reading clinic (36Q/40m maps & evidence) before another random passage pile. SAT vs ACT still open? Use SAT vs ACT. Buy after a full timed baseline — not when the test is three weeks out and the cart is full.
Tonight — Build the Stack in Order
- One full timed Enhanced practice (E+M+R; Science only if you already decided YES).
- Tag misses by section and type: rules · rhetoric · timing · careless · Science-optional decision still open?
- Open the matching buy-stack row — one skill track, not four new books.
- Official materials stay the real measure of your score. Prompts between tests only.
Official ACT tools for score-valid practice under Enhanced clocks. Books for one weak section’s volume. Buy-stacks keep the cart honest. Prompts as tutors between full tests — not a substitute for the composite.

Calculator — Bring an Allowed One You Already Know
ACT Math allows a calculator on every math question; English, Reading, and Science do not. Testing staff do not hand out calculators. Confirm whether your seat is paper or online: online ACT includes a Desmos graphing calculator in the platform for Math, but paper testers still need their own permitted handheld.
Bring your own permitted calculator (and ideally a backup or fresh batteries). Sharing is not allowed.
4-function, scientific, and graphing models are generally OK unless they are on ACT’s prohibited list or need required mods (remove CAS programs/docs, cover IR ports, no tape/noise/power cords).
CAS is the big fail: TI-89 / TI-92 family, TI-Nspire CAS, HP Prime, many Casio ClassPad / CFX-9970G lines, and downloaded CAS apps — banned. Non-CAS TI-Nspire is OK per ACT.
Every problem can be solved without a calculator. Use it for messy arithmetic and graphs — not as a substitute for setup. Easy algebra by hand often saves time.
Match practice mode to test day: if you are online, practice Desmos + your handheld plan; if paper, drill only the handheld you will pack. Re-check act.org before the exam — policies update.
ACT calculator policy (approved / prohibited + PDF) — always wins over any product page.
Common allowed picks (only if you need to buy)
Default advice: use the approved calculator you already use in class. Buy only if you have nothing permitted. We are not ranking forty models — two safe, widely used non-CAS options.
Best for: Students without a graphing calculator who need a cheap, allowed scientific for Enhanced ACT Math timing (messy arithmetic, fractions, trig) without a $100+ graphing buy.
How to use: Practice full timed Math sections with this exact unit. Learn fraction/decimal toggles before test day. Still do setup on paper first when the algebra is clean.
Skip if: Anyone who already owns an approved scientific or TI-84 from school — do not double-buy. Online-only testers who will live in Desmos may still want a simple backup, but it is optional.
Note: Scientific, non-CAS. Confirm your exact model on ACT’s live prohibited list before packing.
Best for: Students whose math class already runs on a TI-84 and who want one device for class + ACT Math (especially paper administrations).
How to use: Remove documents and any CAS-capable programs/apps before test day (ACT: disabling is not enough — remove). Drill pace with the same calculator you will bring. Bring backup batteries or a charged CE.
Skip if: Buyers who never used a TI-84 and only need ACT once — a scientific is enough for most. Anyone holding a CAS model (TI-89, Nspire CAS, HP Prime) — replace it; do not try to sneak it.
Note: Non-CAS graphing. TI-Nspire CAS / TI-89-class = prohibited on ACT. Online ACT also has Desmos — still know your handheld if you pack one.
Should You Buy a Book?
Start free: Official ACT PDF + act.org. Buy only after a full practice test shows a clear weak area.
Most students need at most: Official Guide (optional) + one skill book for weakest section (Meltzer English, Math workbook, Science guide).
Kaplan/Princeton all-in-ones are extras—not replacements for official practice.
Don't buy Science books if you're skipping optional Science. Confirm Enhanced ACT format on cover.
Calculator: bring an ACT-approved handheld you already know (paper) or confirm online Desmos + backup plan. See the calculator section below before adding a TI-84 to a book cart.
If Your ACT Baseline Looks Like This — Buy Only This
Enhanced clocks punish last year’s pacing. Match a row to a full timed practice, then buy one skill track — not every section’s book at once. Official ACT materials stay score truth.
If this is you
No full Enhanced ACT practice yet
Buy: Free official prep first. One full timed test before any Amazon cart.
Skip: Kaplan/Princeton all-in-ones as your opener
If this is you
English is bleeding points (rules + speed)
Buy: Official Guide (for real items) + one English skill book (Meltzer-style) only.
Skip: A full four-section commercial stack before English stabilizes
If this is you
Math or Science is the clock problem
Buy: Official Guide + one Math workbook OR a Science guide — pick the section you will actually drill.
Skip: Buying Math and Science books the same day if composite core is English/Reading
Science may be optional for your reporting plan — decide before you spend.
If this is you
Composite stuck after 2+ full tests; need strategy, not more content
Buy: Black Book–style strategy only if you already own official practice volume.
Skip: Another all-in-one you will not finish

Skill-layer tools. One strong book per weak area beats a stack you never finish. Use the buy stack above first.
ACT
Best for: Authentic full-length practice and explanations from the test maker
How to use: Take tests timed; heavy review of misses. Prefer the newest edition that matches Enhanced ACT practice when available.
Skip if: Students who already have enough official practice tests and won't use a thick book.
Note: 2026–2027 Official ACT Prep Guide (Enhanced ACT). Prefer newest yearband over 2025–2026.
✓ Current edition verified
Time to complete: Reference + 4–6 full tests (~12–18 hrs total)
Students say: Essential for real ACT questions with explanations. 'Only source of real tests' is the consensus.
vs alternatives: Only book with real ACT questions. Not a strategy or content-teaching book. Pair with Meltzer for English.
Erica L. Meltzer
Best for: Grammar/rhetoric systems when English is the limiter
How to use: Chapter → timed English section → log rule misses.
Skip if: Students already 34+ English.
Note: Fifth edition aligned to Enhanced ACT (publisher Nov 2025). Prefer 5th over older editions.
✓ Enhanced ACT edition verified
Time to complete: ~15–20 hours for core chapters + practice
Students say: Gold standard for ACT English. 'Meltzer English = 30+ English' is standard advice.
vs alternatives: More systematic than generic grammar workbooks. Covers rhetoric + grammar. Pair with Official Guide for practice.
Erica Meltzer
Best for: Extra conventions reps
How to use: Use only for rules you miss repeatedly.
Skip if: If Meltzer + official tests already cover you.
Note: Third edition aligned to Enhanced ACT (publisher Nov 2025).
✓ Enhanced ACT edition verified
Time to complete: ~10–15 hours for targeted drills
Students say: Decent for extra reps but Meltzer covers the rules better.
vs alternatives: Only if you need more volume after Meltzer. Not a primary resource.
Kaplan
Best for: Extra practice volume + strategies in one popular package
How to use: Secondary to official tests. Use for drills, not sole score prediction.
Skip if: Students overloaded with books already.
Note: Second Edition (2026–2027) aligned to Enhanced ACT. Prefer over 2026-only cover.
✓ Current edition verified
Time to complete: ~30–40 hours for full book + practice tests
Students say: Good structure and motivation; practice tests slightly harder than real ACT.
vs alternatives: Best all-in-one if you only buy ONE commercial book. Not a substitute for Official Guide + one skill book.
Mike Barrett
Best for: Learning how official questions work after you have a baseline
How to use: Read strategies; walk through official items slowly.
Skip if: Absolute beginners with no practice test yet.
Note: Strategy layer on official questions — pair with current Official ACT Prep Guide / Enhanced practice, not as sole content source.
✓ Current edition verified
Time to complete: ~15–20 hours for strategy + walkthroughs
Students say: Eye-opening for 'how the test thinks.' Best *after* a baseline, not as a first book.
vs alternatives: Unique angle: teaches test logic, not content. Complements Official Guide/Meltzer, doesn't replace them.

Enhanced ACT Gotchas — Know These Before Test Day
Enhanced ACT = New Timing & Counts
Train Enhanced limits, not classic ACT: English 35 min / 50 Q (40 scored); Math 50 min / 45 Q (41 scored); Reading 40 min / 36 Q (27 scored); Science (optional) 40 min / 40 Q (34 scored). Classic 75/60/40 habits will mis-pace you. Confirm your test date rules at act.org.
Science Is Now Optional
Composite = average of English, Math, and Reading only (each 1–36). Science is a separate 1–36 score when taken and is not in the default composite. Decide early whether colleges you care about want Science—and whether those hours would raise your composite more.
No Penalty for Guessing
Like SAT, no wrong-answer penalty. Always fill every bubble. Educated guessing on last 30 seconds of each section is free points.
Paper vs. Digital Testing
ACT offers both paper and digital. Format differs slightly (digital has on-screen timer, highlighter). Confirm your test center's format and practice that mode.
Math: Calculator Allowed Throughout
Calculator allowed on all Math questions only (not English/Reading/Science). Paper testers must bring their own permitted model — centers do not supply them. Online ACT includes Desmos for Math; still confirm your format and bring a allowed backup if you want one. CAS models (TI-89, TI-Nspire CAS, HP Prime, many ClassPads) are prohibited. See the calculator section + act.org policy.
Official Practice Tests Are the Only Score Truth
Third-party books (Kaplan, Princeton, Barron's) write harder or easier tests. Only ACT's own PDFs and Official Guide give real score signals. Trust official scores only.
Skip These Traps
Time and money sinks we see over and over. Official practice first; AI is a tutor layer, not the score.
Buying a CAS Graphing Calculator “Because It’s Powerful”
TI-89, TI-Nspire CAS, HP Prime, and similar CAS units are prohibited on the ACT. Showing up with one can mean dismissal for prohibited behavior.
Better: Use a non-CAS scientific or TI-84-class unit you already know, or Desmos on online ACT. Check ACT’s live calculator policy the week before the test.
Classic ACT Clock Myths (75/60/40 as Current Primary)
Enhanced ACT shortened English and Math and made Science optional. Old pacing drills and “always take Science” advice train the wrong product.
Better: Use current clocks: English 50Q/35m, Math 45Q/50m, Reading 36Q/40m, Science 40Q/40m if you sit it. Composite = English + Math + Reading only.
Science FOMO When Colleges Don’t Need It
Sitting Science “just in case” steals hours from the three composite sections. Weak Science on a score report can distract you even when it doesn’t enter the composite.
Better: Run the Science? hub prompt once with your college list. If NO, reallocate those hours to the leaking core section.
Treating Chat AI as Score Truth
Models invent passage difficulty and grade pacing loosely. A chat “28” is not an official practice composite.
Better: AI = tutor layer (transitions, calculator boundaries, passage maps). Trust scores only from official-style timed practice.
Buying a $2k Course Before One Full Timed Baseline
Without section scores you pay for a generic syllabus instead of your actual weak English/Math/Reading tags.
Better: One full timed practice first (core three; Science only if you already chose YES). Score Plan on the report. Course only if you still need structure after two focused weeks.
Pre-Enhanced Books and “Always Take Science” Packages as Primary
Guides built around classic section lengths and required Science waste drills on retired pacing.
Better: Prefer current-edition materials and official practice. Cap commercial books; finish timed sections on the Enhanced format.
Score-Target Roadmaps
Pick the path matching your baseline and timeline. Pair any roadmap with official full-lengths every 2–3 weeks.
Official-Only 4 Weeks (Core Composite)
Any baseline; no commercial books required; Science only if already YESWeek 1: Full timed practice — English, Math, Reading (add Science only if you already decided YES). Miss log: conceptual / process / careless / timing. Score Plan prompt once the practice test is scored.
Week 2: Official-style section drills only on top 2 miss tags per weak core section. English transitions / Math calculator boundary / Reading passage map micros on the hub. Two timed sections mid-week. No new books.
Week 3: Second full core practice (E+M+R). Compare section scores. Drop any drill not in the new top tags. Score Plan / Missed Question prompts as tutor layer only — scores stay from timed practice.
Week 4: Third full practice if energy allows, else one hard timed pass of each weak section + light review. Test Day prompt for 72-hour logistics. Sleep beats new content. Science still optional unless your plan already locked YES.
